Japanese Casino-Resort Plan Rejected

The Japanese city of Nagasaki’s proposal to build a new casino-resort has been denied. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan has cited concerns about financing and implementation as the reasons for rejecting the development plan.

Reasons for Rejection

According to inside asian gaming, doubts about the funding and execution of the project led to its rejection. The uncertainty surrounding the financial security of potential investors and funding parties was a major factor in the decision.

Nagasaki’s Project and Challenges

The plan for the Nagasaki project mirrored the concept of the casino-resort in Osaka, with estimated annual profits of 330 billion yen. Despite the approval of a casino-resort in Osaka, the Nagasaki proposal faced scrutiny and ultimately did not receive approval.

Japan’s First Casino-Resort

Japan’s first casino-resort is set to open in Osaka in the fall of 2030, with construction beginning in the summer of 2024. Originally planned for 2029, the opening was delayed to 2030 due to application process delays. Significant investments are expected, with projected annual revenues of approximately 3.3 million euros.

Doubts on Operation Skills

The Japanese authority expressed doubts about the ability to operate a casino-resort. In 2021, Nagasaki city had approved proposals from five operators, but only Casinos Austria International had the requisite qualifications, experience, and expertise. However, this was deemed insufficient for approval.
