Macau’s Successful Year in 2023

The year 2023 was highly successful for gambling companies in Macau, as they surpassed the previous year’s revenues by 333%. December 2023 was particularly successful, with a 433% increase compared to December 2022. This recovery followed a severe decline during the COVID-19 pandemic, and although the future is uncertain due to political influences, experts see potential competition in the ASEAN region.

Macau’s Recovery from the Pandemic

According to iGaming Business, the monthly gross income of gambling companies in Macau reached 18.6 billion MOP (approximately 2.1 billion Euro) in December 2023. This marked a 433% increase from December 2022. While business was 15.7% stronger than in November 2023, it still lagged behind October 2023.

The region is slowly approaching pre-pandemic revenue levels, as the gambling industry has rebounded since the easing of COVID-19 measures. However, the intermittent closure of casinos in 2023 complicates direct comparisons with the previous year.

Macau’s Uncertain Future

Despite positive figures, the future for Macau’s gambling industry remains uncertain. China’s political influence can quickly impact business, as seen in the temporary casino closures last year. Additionally, experts foresee potential competition from the ASEAN region, posing a threat to Macau’s growth.

It remains to be seen how 2024’s revenue in Macau will compare. 2023 provides a good benchmark post-pandemic, as casinos were consistently open and generating revenue.
