European Gaming and Betting Association Welcomes Proposed EU E-ID

Introduction of Digital Identity to Enhance Online Authentication

According to a report by iGB, the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) has praised the EU’s proposal for a standardized electronic identification method. This new European digital identity (e-ID) would require EU member states to issue digital identification to their citizens, allowing for online authentication with online retailers and gambling providers.

Approval by EU Parliament and Benefits for EU Citizens

The European Parliament’s endorsement of the digital ID is seen as a significant step by EGBA towards creating a secure online environment. With 335 representatives voting in favor, 190 against, and 31 abstaining, EU citizens could enjoy higher data security without relying on commercial entities for authentication. Maarten Haijer, Secretary-General of EGBA, expressed optimism about a more seamless and trustworthy online experience.

Role and Activities of European Gaming and Betting Association

Based in Brussels, Belgium, EGBA is a European trade association that regulates and licenses EU-based gambling operators such as Entain, Flutter, and Kindred. The association works closely with national authorities to enforce gambling laws, prioritize player protection, and uphold industry standards. Noteworthy efforts include advocating for anti-money laundering regulations and addressing the impact of gambling advertising bans on illegal gambling markets.

EGBA’s 2030 Goals and Focus on Data Privacy

EGBA aims to have at least 80% of EU citizens utilizing digital authentication by 2030 to enhance data protection. While digital authentication is not mandatory for gambling providers, it can be offered as an additional verification method alongside existing options.
