Thailands Gambling Future

Blocking Online Gambling Links

Between October 1, 2023, and March 5, 2024, Thailand blocked over 60,000 links containing inappropriate gambling information, with a focus on online gambling sites. The crackdown intensified, with penalties of up to ten years in prison or fines for operating such websites.

Embracing Land-based Casinos

Despite the strict stance on online gambling, Thailand’s government is moving towards legalizing land-based casinos. The decision aims to attract wealthy tourists and generate revenue for the country. Plans for casino resorts could bring in approximately €11 billion annually and create new jobs and infrastructure improvements.

Interest from Casino Investors

Companies like MGM Resorts, Las Vegas Sands, and Hard Rock Asia are eyeing Thailand for potential casino locations. While the exact number of resorts is yet to be determined, the government is considering up to eight complexes. Thailand will need to compete with Philippines’ established casino industry to attract investors.

Prospects of Thai Casinos

Experts predict that Thai casinos could receive approval within the next three years. Despite parliamentary approval, the law’s finalization and conservative pushback from Buddhist leaders pose challenges. However, surveys indicate that most Thais are open to the idea of legalized casinos, signaling potential growth in the gambling industry.
