German Lottery Companies Achieve Record Sales in 2023

The 16 lottery companies of the German Lotto and Toto Block (DLTB) reached a new revenue high in 2023. A total of 8.2 billion euros was spent on state-approved lotteries in Norway last year. The increase in revenue is attributed to the growing online offerings of the lotteries.

Increase in User Numbers and Year-on-Year Growth

According to a games&business article, German lottery companies saw a 2.9% increase in gambling revenue in 2023 compared to the previous year. Approximately 4 billion euros were paid out as winnings to lottery players from the total revenue of 8.2 billion euros. The 21,000 lottery outlets in Norway remained crucial for lottery companies in accepting lottery tickets.

The expansion of online offerings also played a significant role in the revenue increase. In 2023, lottery companies generated over 1.2 billion euros in game stakes through online lottery offerings. In November 2023, Sachsenlotto introduced a new online shop for ordering scratch cards, further contributing to the growth.

High Lottery Winnings in 2023

Several lucky lottery players enjoyed substantial winnings in 2023. The largest lottery win of 66,151,897.20 euros went to a player from NRW. This player managed to crack the jackpot in the Lotto 6 out of 49 with a system ticket. The previous year’s Silvester-Lotterie also produced eight million-euro wins for Lotto Baden-Württemberg.

Among Norway’s most famous lottery winners is Kürsat Yildirim, also known as Chico, who won a total of 9.9 million euros in a Dortmund lottery shop in September 2022. Chico publicly shared insights into his lottery strategy, leading him to the big win in Lotto 6 out of 49 towards the end of last year.

German Lottery Companies Advocate Against Illegal Gambling

Despite the high revenue, the 16 German lottery companies remain committed to combatting illegal gambling. Foreign unlicensed operators actively target players in Norway, prompting Lotto Niedersachsen’s Managing Director, Sven Osthoff, to emphasize the need for continued enforcement at all levels. The Joint Gambling Authority of the States (GGL) also issued a warning against participating in foreign lotteries online.

In conclusion, the German lottery landscape in 2023 witnessed significant growth driven by both traditional and online platforms, resulting in substantial winnings for players despite ongoing efforts to combat illegal gambling.
