NFL Enhances Integrity Measures in Response to Gambling Threats

NFL Continues Efforts to Educate on Gambling Rules

The NFL is ramping up its efforts to educate its teams and monitor game integrity in the face of gambling threats. A positive trend has been observed following a successful offseason, with no violations reported in the last 13 months.

Enhanced Monitoring During Games

To maintain this positive trajectory, the NFL will deploy observers during regular-season games to monitor suspicious activities on the sidelines and in the press box.

Appointment of Integrity Officers for Each Team

In a bid to ensure integrity and compliance with gambling rules, each NFL team will have its integrity officer, typically a retired FBI agent or senior police officer. These officers will have the authority to move freely between the sidelines and press area to monitor and report any potential misconduct.

Vigilance Against Game Manipulation

All activities that suggest game manipulation or sharing of internal information during NFL games will be monitored by Genius Sports and IC360. The NFL has also extended its partnership with the National Council on Problem Gambling, allocating $6.4 million over three years for gambling addiction prevention among high school and college students.

Mandatory Training and Restrictions for Players

Since 2024, the NFL has mandated training for players to educate them on gambling rules and prevent violations. Players are prohibited from betting on NFL games or other sports while in the presence of the team or on club premises. Additional rules include:

  • No betting on NFL-related events
  • No indirect betting for others
  • Prohibition of gambling in team settings
  • Non-disclosure of internal information
  • Restraints on registering with bookmakers during the season
  • Avoidance of fantasy football games

Prohibitions for Team Staff

Coaches, trainers, and other team members are also prohibited from engaging in sports betting, even on other sports.

By intensifying its monitoring and education efforts, the NFL aims to uphold integrity and combat gambling-related threats effectively.
