The Crackdown on Foreign Online Gambling Advertisements in Norway

The Media Regulator’s Orders

The Media Regulator for Norway has ordered major TV broadcasters to stop showing advertisements for foreign online gambling companies. The move follows a 2021 investigation that revealed serious breaches on certain TV channels.

New Direction for Broadcasters

The Medietilsynet watchdog has directed domestic broadcasters to ensure their broadcasts do not contain marketing for gambling that is prohibited in Norway. They have until August 15 to comply and face significant financial repercussions for any violations.

Government Monopoly and Strict Prohibition

The Norwegian government holds a monopoly on all gambling activities and strictly prohibits unlicensed operation to protect people with gambling problems. Despite this, large amounts of gambling advertising from foreign companies have been appearing on Norwegian TV channels.

Legislative Amendments for Prevention

In January of last year, the government amended the Broadcasting Act to give the Medietilsynet powers to prevent or make it more difficult for domestic TV broadcasters to market unlicensed products and services such as online gambling.

Impact on Operators

The Lotteritilsynet regulator has warned online casino operator Kindred Group of daily fines if it continues to service players in Norway. Kindred Group is seeking an opinion from the Oslo District Court on the matter and is continuing to offer its services to punters in Norway pending a decision.
