Swiss Regulatory Authority Cracks Down on Illegal Online Casinos

The Swiss regulatory authority, known as the Eidgenössische Spielbankenkommission, has been actively combating illegal gambling since 2019. In the past five years, approximately 2,000 online casinos operating without a license have been shut down in Switzerland.

Closure of Illegal Gambling Websites

According to a report by SRF, the Eidgenössische Spielbankenkommission has closed around 2,000 illegal online casinos in Switzerland since 2019 for lacking the necessary license. Most of these unauthorized gambling sites were run by companies from Malta and Gibraltar, disregarding Swiss gambling regulations.

Challenges in Enforcement

Thomas Fritschi from the Eidgenössische Spielbankenkommission highlighted the difficulty in shutting down illegal websites compared to their quick creation. Despite legal operations in their home countries, these companies were operating unlawfully in Switzerland. Enforcing regulations aims to enhance player protection and promote safe gaming experiences with licensed providers.

Monopoly on Gambling and Taxation of Winnings

Switzerland operates under a state-controlled gambling monopoly established by the Geldspielgesetz in 2019. Only providers with physical casinos in Switzerland are eligible for licenses to offer online gambling services. The country has 22 licensed casinos overseen by the Swiss regulatory authority.

Combatting Illegal Stationary Gambling

Efforts to combat illegal stationary gambling in Switzerland have resulted in significant legal actions. A recent case involved a criminal gang leader profiting millions from illegal gambling, receiving a three-year prison sentence without probation. The battle against illegal operators continues, with legal gambling entities expected to benefit from enhanced enforcement measures.
